I am inspired by Sonia Gomes’ work, Untitled (from the Circulares series). I love the dualism of this piece being both simple and complex. This collage is made of many overlapping and interacting circles, which makes it easy to appreciate at first glance. The more I look at it though, the more complex it becomes. Sonia uses many patterns to fill in the partial circles, and uses collage, drawings, and mixed media as her materials. I’m fascinated how this work keeps repeatedly drawing my eyes in, and I would love to see it in person.

Another piece I am inspired by is Anton van Dalen’s Eros & Covid-19. We were just discussing the word “Eros” in one of my classes, and it’s funny to see it again in this playful drawing. Eros is one of the seven Greek words for love, specifically referring to romantic and passionate love. I love the use of organic and geometric shapes to create the realistic bodies with pixelated heads and cartoon eyes. This year is an incredibly odd year to think about falling in love, and van Dalen does a wonderful job of translating this into his odd illustration.
